This beautiful napkin measures approx. 14 inches (35.56cm) by 15 inches (38.1cm) in size. It is made of an off-white linen that is bordered with light brown cloth border. There is the white edelweiss logo embroidered just above the brown script that reads Berchtegadener Hof. Along the edges and corners are small brown embroidered dots that give this napkin a great look. This napkin is from the famous Berchtesgadener Hof, the hotel located near Hitler’s Berghof at Berchtesgaden.
History: The Nazis bought the hotel in 1936. It was remodeled and renamed to the Berchtesgadener Hof. This hotel would house dignitaries visiting Adolf Hitler’s Berghof, such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, and David Lloyd George.
Later, high-ranking party members such as Josef Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and even Erwin Rommel would visit. Eva Braun lived at the hotel when she first moved to Berchtesgaden, before finally moving into the Berghof. After the U.S. Army occupation of the area in May 1945, the Berchtesgadener Hof was the scene of several high-ranking surrenders, including that of Field Marshal Albert Kesselring. For those of you that have seen “Band of Brothers”, it’s in a famous scene where Major Dick Winters liberated some silverware! If those walls could talk! Unfortunately, it, like many of the buildings in this area, are now gone.
