After the Second World War, the United States Army turned the entire mountain into a world-class recreation center for American service members and their families. Berchtesgaden became one of the two armed forces recreation centers in Germany, the other was Garmisch Partenkirchen, another former Nazi stronghold and home to the 1936 Winter Olympics.
